Term 1 Newsletter No 2 2024
Principal Report
As we come to the end of Term 1, I feel very grateful to be leading Kingston High School and to have the opportunity to get to know staff, students and families. I am in a privileged position where I am able to be inspired by our staff and students every day. This newsletter provides just a snapshot of the wide variety of activities in our school over the last half of this term. I want to acknowledge students for the diligent way they have settled into the new academic year and for the grit and determination I see them demonstrating across our campus on a daily basis.
As this newsletter is published, we have many of our Grade 9 students out on their annual camp. Staff have worked very hard to provide a wide variety of engaging and educational activities for students and I thank them for that. There is something completely generous about staff willing to leave their own families at home to supervise camp and I appreciate them for providing this opportunity.
Our strategic work, under the broad umbrella of culture and connection, is progressing well this term. It is heartening to hear feedback from students and families that our focus on driving a culture of higher academic and behavioural expectations is being welcomed. As this work continue into Term 2, there will be opportunities for families to have input into a shared statement of academic and behavioural expectations as we work to adopt and contextualise our Department’s shared values. These will be the values that our positive, supportive, safe, high-performing and high-expectations culture is built on:
When we have collaborated and constructed that shared set of expectations, we will begin in earnest the work of teaching those expectations and celebrating with students when they are met.
I know that Mr Purse (Assistant Principal) has recently communicated with all families regarding the tightness of our school uniform expectations as we move into Term 2. I want to take the opportunity now to assure families that we will be consistent, persistent and insistent, when necessary, to ensure that there is improvement in this area. It is important that I provide this assurance as I know that supporting your young person to meet these expectations will take some effort on your part (be it purchasing new uniform or the morning conversations) and that it can be tough. I ask for your support with this as we work with determination to ensure that every student understands that they are expected to meet basic expectations as part of team Kingston High School.
School-home communications
You will have noticed that we are relying much more on email as a primary method of contact with home in 2024. As well as the cost and environmental benefits, email ensures that our communications actually make it home in a timely manner. Where emails take the place of phone calls, they allow families to engage with us at a time that suits them. Please note that staff are usually able to respond to most emails within 3-4 business days. If a matter is more urgent, it is important that you call the school and are connected to the relevant person.
We are immensely grateful for the increased opportunities for connection and collaboration between families and teachers but with that comes the need to request that families always engage with staff in an appropriate manner. This has overwhelmingly been the case but when young people are involved, emotions can sometimes run high. Our staff work incredibly hard and are very committed to ensuring that all students are supported, however, we recognise that concerns may arise from time to time. I respectfully request that all communication with Kingston High staff, including through email, occurs in a courteous and respectful manner and that any complex concerns are raised with a member of the school’s leadership team.
Respectful school volunteer and visitor behaviour policy
Earlier this term, our School Association ratified this policy. It outlines clearly the behaviour expected of all adults on our site, including contractors, visitors, volunteers and parents and carers. The policy can be accessed here:
Celebrating student success
We know our young people achieve wonderful things outside of school, whether they be artistic or sporting achievements or significant milestones through Scouts and other similar organisations. We would like to share with you in celebrating these achievements and we know that the wider Kingston community enjoys celebrating students' achievements, both in school and outside. If you are comfortable with your young person's achievements being mentioned in an assembly or celebrated in a newsletter or social media post, please email through information and photos (if available) to kingston.high@decyp.tas.gov.au
Today, I want to particularly congratulate Campbell on becoming a State Champion in three gymnastics events. Campbell will represent Tasmania at the national championships next month:
To further celebrate student achievement we will hold another whole-school assembly in Week 2 of next term and will invite parents/carers of students receiving an academic or values award to that assembly.
School Association Annual General Meeting:
Please save the date - Thursday 6th June at 6pm. We will send further information and reminders as Term 2 progresses. We would very much appreciate having new members join the association to have meaningful input into the future direction of the school.
Kingston High School really is quite a remarkable place and I hope you enjoy following our social media channels to stay up-to-date with the daily events in the school.

In closing, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our students, parents, carers, teachers and staff for your unwavering support and dedication. It is through your collective efforts that we have achieved so much this term. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together in Term 2.

KHS Teaching and Learning Priority – Term 1 Update
As we direct our attention toward establishing ambitious standards for education at Kingston High School (KHS) in 2024, our dedicated staff has been diligently working to implement and activate all programs. Our collective goal is to ensure success for every student at KHS.
Before delving into the comprehensive update on teaching and learning initiatives, it is crucial to recognise the commendable effort exhibited by Grade 7 and 9 students during this year’s NAPLAN testing. They demonstrated exceptional commitment and gave their best effort. We eagerly await the results, which will be available later in the year.
Tier 1
Across the school all teachers have been busy attending to their core business of improving student learning using the following questions to guide their work: What do they want students to learn? How will they know students have learned it? What will teachers do if they haven’t learned it? and, What will teachers will do if students already know it?
Behind the scenes teachers have been engaging in professional learning to reinforce collaboration, best practice and plan for our whole school inquiry investigating the impact of a wide range of explicit teaching strategies have on student learning. In the classroom it has looked like like engaged, creative and motivated students who strive to learning in all areas from Grade 7 English, to Outdoor Education, to Grade 10 Foods just to name a few.
Tier 2
Our whole school Tutorial program is well underway with all students receiving tailored reading intervention for one lesson per week, grouped with other students with similar learning needs. Students remain in their target group until they have demonstrated mastery of the literacy skills being learned and are ready to progress to the next level, with a number of students already making the jump from one group to the next. Well done!
Tier 3
Once again KHS is offering MacqLit, an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of students requiring high levels of intensive reading support. This year we have started with 62 students receiving intensive 3 x week support from our amazing, trained staff. It has been wonderful to see students develop their reading skills and become more confident in all aspects of their schooling as a result.
Teaching and Learning Priority
Grade 10
Our Grade 10 Team has had a fast-paced start to the year, with high levels of engagement in both classroom learning and the various extra-curricular opportunities and future focused experiences that have been on offer.
Term 1 has seen the launch of our exciting Beacon Career Program in partnership with the Beacon Foundation. This program aims to empower young people by supporting them to build their aspirations, motivations, and abilities to determine their working future with confidence. So far, our group of Grade 10 participants have outlined their key industries of interest, met with the facilitators of the program and, have undertaken a quiz to help identify the kind of worker they might be. Next term, students will meet weekly with the Beacon facilitators and Ms Kumar to dive further into the session workshops.
Mathematics Methods - Foundation students have been working on the Criterion 4 Unit, manipulate algebraic expressions and solve equations with their first big test pencilled in for week 10 of the term. Next term, we will be looking at understanding linear, quadratic and cubic functions and differential calculus in the study of those functions.
In the final weeks of the Term, our Grade 10 Team have taken the first few steps towards completing students’ Transition Plans – a core component of our school’s Career Education Program that records plans for future education and training post Grade 10. We have successfully activated most Transition Plans, with some students already outlining their areas of interest, strength, and abilities. Throughout the year, we will continue to populate and refine these plans to best support our students for their future pathways.

Grade 8
As we bid farewell to Term 1, it's time to reflect on the journey of learning, growth, and achievements Grade 8 have experienced. This term has been filled with exploration, collaboration, and triumphs across various subjects and activities.
Mathematics: In mathematics, our students delved into the world of integers, probability, and statistics. From mastering the intricacies of positive and negative numbers to analysing data sets and making informed predictions, our students have gained problem-solving skills and mathematical prowess. This integers unit is one of the most foundational to our students’ future success in numeracy, and any opportunity to practice maths in the real world or notice examples of negative numbers (such as spending and debt) is a very worthwhile endeavour over the holidays.
Humanities and Social Science: In HASS, our focus was on understanding the impact of historical events on society, particularly the Black Death. Through in-depth discussions and source analysis, students gained valuable insights into the societal, economic, and cultural ramifications of this pivotal event in history and practised identifying and explaining the viewpoints of others.
English: Our English curriculum centred around exploring different viewpoints in a range of texts, with a particular focus on environmental issues. Students engaged critically with diverse perspectives, honing their analytical abilities and fostering empathy towards environmental challenges facing our world today. In their final assessment, our students have done an excellent job examining and comparing the different points of view in the short documentary takayna about Tasmania’s Tarkine forest.
Science: In science, our students embarked on an exciting journey into the realm of chemistry. Through hands-on experiments and theoretical explorations, they deepened their understanding of chemical reactions and changes between different states of matter.
Extra-curricular: activities Beyond the classroom, our students participated enthusiastically in various extracurricular activities. The Beach Carnival provided an opportunity for students to showcase their sporting talents and team spirit, fostering a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition. Additionally, the Easter-themed activities afternoon brought joy and laughter as students engaged in festive challenges, with Class 8E1 emerging as the ultimate winners through their exemplary teamwork and dedication.
I have immensely enjoyed venturing into the Junior School this year getting to know this group of Grade 8s. I’m incredibly proud everyday of the dedication and enthusiasm they show towards learning, and the kindness and loyalty they are developing towards their peers. As a staff, we thank you for all the follow-up, learning, and important conversations we know are happening at home to support our initiatives at school regarding learning, friendships, and high expectations.
As we look ahead to Term 2, we are keen to continue to approach learning with curiosity, perseverance, and a growth mindset. Wishing you all a restful break and looking forward to continuing this journey of learning and discovery in the upcoming term.

AST Year 8
Junior School
As we draw close to the end of Term 1, it's with great pleasure that I reflect on the positive start we've had to the academic year. From the first day of classes to the events, activities, and academic achievements that have unfolded, it's evident that our school community has embraced the opportunities for growth and learning with enthusiasm. A big thank you to all our families and carers for how you have prepared your students to come to school looking like learners every day. At KHS, we know that learners who are prepared and ready for learning have the best chance of engaging at school.
Maintaining High Expectations as We Approach Term 2
As we look ahead to Term 2, it's crucial that we maintain our focus on high expectations for both academic achievement and personal conduct. While we celebrate the successes of Term 1, we must also recognize that there is still much to be accomplished. Setting high standards for ourselves and each other ensures that we continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of school life.
In Term 2, let us reaffirm our commitment to academic rigor, perseverance, and continuous improvement. Let us challenge ourselves to reach new heights of achievement and embrace opportunities for growth and development. By maintaining a culture of high expectations, we create an environment where every student has the support and encouragement they need to excel academically and personally.
The Importance of Regular Attendance for Academic Success
One of the key factors in achieving our academic goals is regular attendance. Learning doesn't all happen in one week, or one lesson. Learning happens incrementally, gradually, little bit by little bit through repeated effort and engagement.
Attending school on a consistent basis is essential for students to fully engage with their learning and benefit from the educational opportunities available to them. When students attend school regularly, they have the opportunity to participate in class discussions, interact with their peers, and receive timely feedback from their teachers.
Regular attendance also helps to establish good habits and routines that are essential for success both in school and beyond. By prioritizing attendance, students demonstrate responsibility, commitment, and a willingness to invest in their education. Additionally, consistent attendance ensures that students do not fall behind in their coursework and helps to maintain a positive and productive learning environment for everyone.
As we prepare for Term 2, let us celebrate the successes of Term 1 while also recognizing the work that lies ahead. By maintaining a focus on high expectations and regular attendance, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

HUB
HUB - The Kingston High School HUB Program has been up and running in its current format for over 2 years now. HUB groups provide students with practical, real life learning experiences and variety in a school week for those who need something a bit different in their day. This year we have HUB Construction and Landscaping plus HUB Club on Wednesdays with Mr James, and on Thursdays there is HUB Gardening with Nadia and Jimmy and HUB Café with Ms Appleton. Andy from The Materials Institutes makes weekly visits for support but mainly because he just loves working with the students on all of the projects. These images show just a small variety of what is happening during the week. We would like to thank all of the following business who support what we do. Their generosity is greatly appreciated.

As sports leaders in our school, they will serve as role models for fellow students. Their actions, attitudes, and behaviours will set the standard for our student community. Here is a glimpse of what being a sports leader might look like, sound like, and feel like:
1. Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone: As a sports leader, you will be encouraged to push beyond your limits and embrace new challenges. It is through these experiences that you will develop and grow as a leader within our school community. By demonstrating a willingness to step outside your comfort zone, you will inspire others to do the same. 2. Active Participation in Leadership Opportunities: Embracing leadership opportunities is a key aspect of your role. Whether it's organising events, leading teams, your active participation will contribute to the growth and success of our school. By taking initiative and showing enthusiasm, you will motivate your peers to get involved and make a difference.
3. Being an Upstander, Not a Bystander: A sports leader is someone who stands up for what is right and demonstrates integrity in their actions. By being an upstander, you will promote inclusivity, respect, and fairness within our student community. You will serve as a voice for those who may not have one and help create a safe and supportive environment for all.
4. Ambassadorship for the School: As a sports leader, you will represent our school with pride and integrity. This includes wearing the school uniform, speaking with kindness and respect, and actively participating in school activities. By embodying our values in your daily interactions, you will inspire others to do the same and contribute to a positive school culture.
5. Representing the School at Notable Events: You will have the opportunity to represent our school at various events, such as primary school sports carnivals. This role allows you to showcase your leadership skills and inspire younger students to pursue their passions in sports. Additionally, you will lead community appreciations, gratitude, and celebration processes, and have the chance to present awards and celebrate success with local media, further enhancing our school's reputation.
6. Support for School Initiatives: As a sports leader, you will play a vital role in supporting the running of school initiatives. This may include leading daily or weekly physical education sessions with Grade 7 classes, organizing lunchtime sports rosters, and coordinating inter-house activities.
Your commitment and dedication to these initiatives will contribute to the overall well-being and engagement of our student community. Becoming a sports leader at Kingston High School is an incredible opportunity to make a difference and contribute to the positive school culture we strive for. By embracing the role, embodying the values of aspiration, growth, courage, and kindness, and actively engaging in leadership opportunities, you will inspire and empower your peers. Together, we can create a vibrant and inclusive school community that celebrates sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
Beach Carnival
Fun in the Sun at Kingston Beach
The sun was shining, the ocean was calm, and the excitement was palpable as students from Kingston High School gathered for a day of fun-filled activities at their annual Beach Carnival. With activities ranging from Soccer and Beach Volleyball, Tug of War, Flag Races, Kayaking, Iron Man and Ultimate Endball, this event promised to be a memorable day of friendly competition and camaraderie. Let's dive into the highlights of this exciting beach carnival!
The sandy beach became a makeshift soccer field, with teams of students showcasing their skills and strategizing their way to victory. Goals were scored and Mrs Hitchcock summed it up who was running an event along side Mr Edwards “ I really enjoyed the day, thanks for asking me to be part of it. Beach Soccer was a huge hit and was so good to see many of the girls getting involved, who usually would stand on the side lines, and the guys championing the girls along which I thought was a nice touch. I was also super impressed how kids from other house groups were more than happy to jump in and help where numbers were low, even though it was not to be in their own house group. The kids really did encompass the whole idea of fun and inclusive teamwork.”
Meanwhile, nearby, the beach volleyball courts were abuzz with intense matches, as players dove, spiked, and set their way to glory. Both soccer and beach volleyball provided a perfect blend of athleticism and teamwork, adding an extra layer of excitement to the carnival. Tug of War and Iron Man: The tug of war competition brought out the competitive spirit in students, as they formed teams and pulled with all their might to claim victory. The sand beneath their feet added an additional challenge, testing their strength and determination. Meanwhile, the Iron Man competition pushed students to their limits, combining endurance and strength in a series physical challenges. From running in the sand to paddling in the water, participants showcased their athleticism and determination.
Flag Races and Ultimate Endball: For those looking for a quick burst of adrenaline, the flag races were the perfect choice. Additionally, ultimate Endball proved to be a hit, combining team work with the dynamic nature of beach sports. Teams strategised, communicated, and showcased their throwing skills, creating a visually stunning spectacle for onlookers.
The official winners of the day
Nelson 1st Place with 1351 points
Wellington 2nd Place with 1196
Hartz 3rd Place with 1153
Mangana 4th Place with 778
The high school beach carnival was a resounding success, bringing together students to enjoy a day of sports, competition, and pure fun. The event not only showcased the athletic prowess of the participants but also fostered a sense of community and togetherness. From the exhilarating soccer matches to the intense tug of war battles and determined kayaking, every activity added its unique flavor to the carnival. The memories created during this event will surely be cherished by the students for years to come, strengthening the bonds within the high school community.
